Skeiðarársandur

Located along the south shores of Iceland, Skeiðarársandur is a combination of surrounding glacial river runoff formations from the Skeiðarárjökull glacier, which derives from the Vatnajökull ice cap. These abstract braided river formations carry sediment and debris from the glacial ice cap, eventually making its way to the Atlantic Ocean. This outwash plain is mixed with volcanic sediment, sand, clay producing a brown-orangish hues.

From 1,500 ft in a Cessna 207, I was able to capture these very textured formations. I’m always amazed by the vast differences in such a confined area. As the sun begins to set towards the horizon and the wing of the plane dips at just the right angel, a formation that was once vibrant with color can suddenly transforms into a black & white image.

There’s so much to capture here and I look forward to viewing it again during the winter months to see how drastically different things will be.
